designed obsolescence
Okay, so we all know and say that they don't make em like they used to. And generally we bemoan the fact that many things become obsolete or break down before we're ready to spend the money to replace stuff. . . . but lately i've been bemoaning my ridiculously sturdy point and shoot digital camera. I'm one of those people who doesn't like to buy replacement electronics unless there's a serious problem with the old model because I believe in keeping things till they are unrepairable. . . Sadly this attitude has resulted in my frustration over a sturdy camera.
I've had this olympus camera for at least 5 years (i think maybe 6? at least since 2nd year of law school but I think I've had it since my first year), i basically took it from my parents and gave them a new one. I clearly made a tactical error as this camera appears to be indestructible. I've dropped it, traveled with it, exposed it to water, left in the heat, left it in the cold, forgotten about it, exposed it to snow, pretty much did everything to it except broken it. Which is great except it's bulkier than the latest models and it's shutter lag time is sloooooow. I've been wanting a new point and shoot for years but this camera won't break down. great job olympus... but it appears i will never be able to ugrade.

Then you definitely don't want to buy one of these!
A very merry Christmas to you, gus. =) We all miss you and hope you're doing well!
Ha! I hear you, man.
I've been chomping at the bit to buy the new Canon G10. I practically had to tie myself down when I learned that Amazon cut $100 off the price (and offers free shipping).

Have you thought about buying a DSLR, though? Your eye is so good that I think you'd have a lot of fun with full control over the camera.
I thought you bought a digital SLR recently?! Actually, you showed to me so I know you got it. No need for point an shoots anymore unless maybe you want to travel light or something.
Oooh, which digital SLR did you get? Nikon or Canon??

yeah i recently got a dslr by nikon (the d60 was on sale! which was my only criteria apparently) but i don't carry it around with me because it's so bulky.
That's awesome, man! I look forward to seeing your pictures.
Do you know about the 18-200 VR lens? I almost switched to Nikon just for this.

Everyone I know that has it swears by it. You should still get something like a 50 mm 1.8, but this lens is perfect for just walking around and shooting. The only thing that Canon has that's close to this in versatility costs around $2,000.

i'm now lusting over the lens, plus the new 50mm out. but i think i should master what i got with the kit before dropping anymore moolah... sigh.

I agree -- use the kit lens for a while. But when you do upgrade, I think those two lenses are the way to go.
I'm really excited to see what you come out with. Let me know if you have any beginner-ish questions that I might be able to help with (anything above that level is probably beyond my ability).
